5 tips to get the most out of your observatory visit

Seeing the city from above is like seeing the city for the first time. It's magic topped off with lots of pink fairy dust.

F. Scott Fitzegarld ft. Birgit Putteman
Seeing the city from above is always magical! She looks even more gorgeous from the clouds. Taxi’s look like ants and even the skyscrapers look smaller from here.

No matter how many times I’ve admired her, she never gets old! No idea what I’m talking about? Read this article on the 5 observatories first.

Here are 5 tips to help you get the most out of your visit. Whether you are visiting Empire State Building or One World Observatory. These tips can be applied to every single observatory.

1/ Choose the correct ticket

All 5 observatories offer different ticket options.

From basic entrance fee to extra experience options (eg. the glass elevator ride in the Summit OV) to an  exclusive private tour at the Empire State Building. Go wild! (Check out this article to get an overview in a nutshell.)

Most will also offer ‘VIP’ tickets so you don’t have to wait in line*. Even when you have a time slot on your ticket, you do have to wait in line. When I visited the Summit OV for the first time it took me about 40 minutes before I got through security. Calculate this time in your itinerary so you don’t miss the sunset!

Note that some will charge extra for sunset times. (We see you summit OV)
But I’ll let you in on a secret: No need to pay extra for this time frame. You can stay as long as you want so make sure you enter the observatory before sunset time and enjoy it from above. No extra charge!

Save your money for other options, like an extra audio tour. Or the overpriced tourist picture (which I love! I know they are crap, but I love them. Don’t judge me. It’s my thing).

*Nothing as frustrating as arriving at the entrance with your VIP ticket to notice there is no line. Like no one is there! You can kick yourself for paying extra for nothing. Or pretending you are a real VIP and you get a private entrance ;).

2/ Check the weather app

Oh that perfect blue sky! The best photo prop you can get. A view as far as the eye can see. Manhattan Streets and Brooklyn Bridge. Take it all in.

On days with low clouds and rain cleaning the city streets views are limited. Although clouds can make a beautiful view too…

Best days? Rain all day till about two hours before sunset. Clouds disappearing while the sun gets ready to set. No lines at the entrance and you ride up to an empty sky platform. VIP treatment without paying the price ;).

3/ Do you need to book upfront?

I’m the Master Plan. What do you think I’ll say?

Book up front!

Have a strict schedule? Book upfront!
Want to make sure you can have tickets for the Summit OV? Book upfront!
Do you want to add a special something to your visit? Book upfront!
Are you proposing? Book upfront! And check out the specials for each observatory! Oh…and send me pictures!!

Traveling during bad weather? Wait till the sky clears and book last minute when the clouds disappear.
Is the observatory a nice to have on your trip? Get in line when you pass by or have some extra time on your hands.
Not into planning? You wild thing! Why are you even reading my blog ;)? No just kidding. I get it, don’t book upfront :).

4/ How much time do you need?

Depends on the observatory you are visiting. And (if you are anything like me) the amount of pictures you’ll take.

For The Empire State Building & Top of the Rocks you’ll need about one to two hours.

The Edge can be done in like 30 minutes. Flat. It’s really not that big. Unless you want to have their famous Eastern Point picture. Cause that might set you back another 30 minutes depending on the crowd.

But for the Summit One Vanderbilt, my Loves, you’ll need 3 to 4 hours. Like easily! There are several rooms to explore all with a different experience. All that beauty to see! Not one. Not two. But THREE floors to explore.
She is the only one showing you all the other Beauties; Empire, Rockefeller, Chrysler and so so so much more. Take out your camera and snap your heart out!!

I’m not picking favorites, but if I would, Summit OV would easily be in my top 3!

One World Observatory is a gem you have to experience! I visit her every single time and I still get goosebumps. Pure magic if you ask me.
Foresee 2 hours to experience her and maybe have a drink at the bar. Or is it just because I had a nice afternoon there with my besties that I love that bar so much?

5/ When to visit

Try to schedule a visit on your first or second evening. This will help you to get a clear overview of how the city is structured. Easier to see from above than from the metro. A bird view will help you orientate yourself during your visit.

Did you note I wrote evening? Or more specific right before sunset. This will give you New York in daylight and the transition towards the night. The lights that pop up. Evening traffic down there. The lights on the ESB. The sun setting behind the Hudson.

The city really never sleeps!

But note, sunset hours are different throughout the year (I know obvious, but you are warned) and don’t forget to calculate extra time to get up there. If the sun sets at 6 PM don’t arrive at 5.30 cause I guarantee you’ll miss it.

I’ll repeat for the cheap seats at the back (extra bonus points if you know where I’m referring too): No need to pay more for sunset tickets. You can stay as long as you want!

Now tell me in the comments any other questions you have concerning the observatories and I’ll answer them in my next article.

Always in an Empire State of Mind,

xoxo,

B

PS: This post is part of a bigger series regarding the observatories. Make sure to catch the rest of them too! Cause I love it here high in the sky where dreams are made.

The 5 NYC Observatories: A comparison to help you choose the best one!

'The Empire State Building is the closest thing to heaven in this city.'

Deborah Kerr
One of the most asked questions I get is: ‘which observatory should we book?’

I know! It can be hard to choose only one. So don’t! Pick 2; 1 Uptown & 1 Downtown.

What can I say? I’m a Libra. Making choices is hard.

Anyway, back to the views.

I’ve been in the city numerous times and I never get bored of the views. The thrill of the elevator ride. The excitement when you get out and walk towards the floor to ceiling windows. Take your time. Enjoy the view. Don’t forget to breath.

Here is an overview of the 5 observatories and my opinion on them…

1 + 2: The Classics

They’ve been around way longer than their fancy friends. They’ve stood the test of time and will keep conquering your hearts for years to come.

Empire State Building a.k.a ESB – sounds pretty cool for an oldie no? Another oldie, but goodie is Top of the Rock @Rockefeller.

Make sure to add one of these two on your itinerary.

Travelling with childeren? Choose ESB and visit King Kong.

Want a complete experience around the observatory? Go to Top of the Rock and enjoy all the stores and restaurants around Rockefeller Centre.

3: Is there an Edge at the Edge?

I’ll admit this is my least favorite observatory (don’t tell them). It’s rather small outside. Although it’s the highest outdoor sky deck in the Western Hemisphere. Nothing is really going on.

I know I sound like a spoiled brat. But let’s be honest the competitors are raising the standards and the Edge is not following.

Are you visiting Hudson Yards and don’t have too much time? This one is for you.

The city view is stunning!! The outside experience makes you feel alive and full of energy. And no side tracking by fringes cause there aren’t any…

Don’t get blindsided by the influencers pictures of the glass floor, by now it’s scratched super hard (no protective shoe covers here) and the Eastern Point (the line takes forever). It will not make up for the lack of experience and the little outside platform it really is.

But hold your horses…it does have a major card hidden in his sleeves: The City Climb.

'City Climb is the highest open-air building ascent in the world. Climbers scale the outside of a skyscraper more than 1,200 feet above the ground, then lean out and look down from the highest outdoor platform in New York City. It’s an adventure unlike any other in the world and an achievement that you will remember for the rest of your life.'

The Edge

Not afraid of heights and in for the experience of a lifetime? This one is for you! Buckle up and enjoy!

4 + 5: The New Kids On the Block

Okay, One World Observatory is not new new. But it is on the same level as The Summit One Vanderbilt.

Both make your visit a true magical experience. Much more than just view gazing. But experiencing the city through your visit. I will not say too much about it.

Don’t want to spoil the magic. Just know there is a lot of pixie dust in the air at both observatories.

Specially at One World. I didn’t see it coming (my friend was like: ‘seriously? You didn’t see it coming??). So I hope you are like me and get blown away. But even if you know, you will still get goosebumps!

Decision Time My loves...

If you have time visit 2 observatories.

One World Observatory will give you the Downtown vibes. The Oculus, 9/11 Memorial, Lady Liberty, Wall Street and much more.

But the 2nd one is slightly more difficult.

Focus Birgit. Forget the Libra in you.

Okay here we go:

Are you a Classic babe who loves King Kong? Go for the Empire State Building. Classic New York!

Are you looking for Central Park views, and want to stay close to your shopping plan? Go for Top of the Rock at Rockefeller.

Are you dressed up and ready to explode your Instagram? Book the Summit. Thank me later!

Let me know in the comments which one you are visiting!

Always in an Empire State of Mind,

xoxo,

B

PS: Keep your eye on the blog, cause I have 2 more posts coming up.

Sundays well Spent: Across the Brooklyn Bridge

“Brooklyn’s good. Brooklyn’s funky. Brooklyn’s happening.”

Waris Dirie
Sundays well spent brings a week of content!

When I was a child I hated Sundays. Made me feel nostalgic and even a little sad. Sundays still feel like this when I have no plans. So I listen to the IG quote and plan fun things to do . Cause after all, Sundays are for relaxing with friends and lots of great food.

Whether you take the ferry or walk the Bridge – and yes, when lazy just take the subway 🙈 – crossing the East River on Sunday will bring you a lot of fun.

Join me on a quick trip to the Brooklyn Bridge Area.

From Breakfast over brunch to dinner and cocktails

Oh all the food! And these tips are just the tip of the iceberg (couldn’t help myself 😉).

  • Time Out Market (55 Water St): No nood to choose here. You can try it all. Don't forget to go upstairs. Instagram your heart out!
  • Luke's Lobster (11 Water St): Order take-away. Find a bench and enjoy the view & your lobster.
  • River Café (1 Water St): Something to celebrate? Or Just in need to dress up? This is your place to be.
  • 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge (60 Furman St): Pool. Cocktails. View. I still have to convince you?

Don't forget your smile

The Manhattan Skyline is your backdrop. It doesn’t get any better! But still the Brooklyn Bridge area has some gems to add likes to your feed.

  • Jane's Carousel (New Dock St): We are never to old to ride a gorgeous carousel.
  • Brooklyn Bridge Park (334 Furman St): I do hope you have enough space on your Cloud.
  • Pebble Beach (65 Plymouth St): the skyline, Jane's Carousel, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Manhattan Bridge. All these photo props at your disposal.
  • Washington St (oh yes in Washington St): If you don't want a zillion other tourists on your picture be there at sunrise!

Text a friend and meet me under the Bridge 🎀

Always in an Empire State of Mind,

xoxo,

B

PS: Don’t like Sundays like my child-me?

Go and have a look at Sunday Forever! This NYC woman-owed brand will give you all the good vibes to turn Sunday (and every day actually) into a chill party.

Freebie: 3-Day Itinerary – Lovers of the Arts

'A visit to a museum is a search for beauty, truth, and meaning in our lives. Go to museums as often as you can.'

Maira Kalman
It’s February my loves. Let’s talk love. Love for the arts.

I’m not just talking museums. But theatre, ballet, street art, music, dance, sculptures, fashion, food, architecture,…

Everything!

Everything can be art. Everything is art in NYC.

Combining classics with arts

This itinerary combines some NYC classics with lots of arts. All kind. You will not see it all in 3 days, but it’s taste will make you hungry for more.

You can spend your complete trip inside museums. Damn, you can even spend a complete weekend in The MET and still not have seen it all. Or you can do a VIP-tour and see all the highlights within 2 hours and be back on 5th Avenue by 11.00 AM.

It’s up to you how much time…and money… you spend here.

Confession time

I’ll admit…I wasn’t the biggest museum visitor. Nope! The only part of the musea I used to see was the gift shop. Still a bit traumatized from all those school trips.

Who am I kidding? I was just overwhelmed with all the shopping!

But my loves, I had no idea what I was missing out on. So now you can find a museum and lots of cultural activities on my itinerary. Cause the level of art & culture is high! So high it can easily compete with all the skyscrapers.

Tip: Admission Fee

Check out the museum sites when making your itinerary. Some evenings you might get in for free. At The MET (and many others) you can even pay what you wish instead of the general admission fee.

You can find an overview here to find out which art collections you can see for free when.

Cause after all that leaves you more money for the gift shop ;). #stilllovethose

make it your own

As always this itinerary is just to get you started. Make it your own by adding that cute coffee shop for breakfast and your high-on-the-list-restaurant for wining & dining. You can download my free itinerary template here to get started. Get some extra tips here to plan like a pro!

So, tell me, which museum do you want to get lost in?

It will contain all the things YOU want to do and a tons of extra’s and insights from me. What to do. When to see it. Where to eat. What to drink. You only have to decide who you’ll take with you on the trip ;).

Personalized Itinerary: One day in NYC with Samantha Wills

when the Universe asks you to dance, I hope you take her hand, I hope you choose faith over fear...

Samantha Wills - of gold and dust
Have you seen it on the Gram? Samantha is traveling to New York City!

Samantha? Yes Samantha! Samantha Wills. My, and many others, inspiration. I fell in love with her gorgeous Bohemian Bardot rings long before I fell in love with her. No, not in the romantic kind of way. The inspirational kind.

If you don’t know her yet, I suggest you start stalking her on Instagram. Dive in deep. Read every post on her site. And the golden book. You can thank me later!

I had a handful of her BB rings when Samantha announced the closure of her jewelry business. I still kick myself that I only bought 2 more pieces. So late at night I search the endless internet for vintage pieces. I discovered many are fake…and we don’t do fake here! So if any of you have an original piece in a cabinet, let me know. I want to give it a loving home 💗.

Anyway…

I can go on and on about Samantha, but this blog is about NYC 😉. Although you’ll find more than one reference to her and the Samantha Wills Institute on my feed.

When I read she’s on her way to my, and her, beloved NYC I decided to make a personalize itinerary for her. Or at least how I would plan it for her. (After years of following her on Insta 🙈. I’m not a freak. Slightly obsessed maybe. But trust me you’ll be too as soon as you dig in).

So Samantha, I hope you love my day in NYC for you. Not a regular tourist after living there for years. But I hope my view on the city inspires you.

Enjoy!

The early bird...

Nothing beats jetlag like working out! Soulcycle is like a double cleans. For body & soul. You’ll be happy to discover their SoHo location is right across Drybar. Add a head massage to your blowout! Heaven on earth for your hair. Bonus: no need to go back to your hotel!

You are meeting old neighbors in Pastis for morning coffee and croissants. It’s been years since the original one closed. Let’s find out if Pastis 2.0 has the same vibe going on.

Visiting the Whitney is a must. We are in the area after all.

All this art might feed you even more than the morning croissant – or does only Vogue has this effect?

While admiring the art think about some questions. Questions you want to ask Alex during your tarot reading. Tell her I send my love. Do we have to wait for the second book to discover what came out of this reading?

Let it all sink while strolling around Little Island. You’ll love this little extraordinaire park on the Hudson. Children playing ‘piano’ while you enjoy the view. Don’t hang out there too long, cause your lunch date is waiting.

Samantha Wills Quote // Fotografiska // RH New York // The Greens // RH Elevator

Picture sources are linked above.

Lunch, dad jokes and afternoon strolls

RH Rooftop. A picture here will be a great source for a dad joke. Can’t wait to hear it!

While you take the glass elevator up to your table, I’m sure your eye  will catch a thing or 2 for your home.
RH New York is divine! And slightly over the top…

Walking around your old neighborhood brings back all the memories, doesn’t it? Did the High Line changed much since your last stroll here? Did you even had the time to wander around here? I hope you do now.

Take a deep breath and book your Uber. Let’s go choose some new coffee table books!

Fotografiska will blow your mind! You enter through the giftshop. But I suggest picking up the books after your visit (#tooheavy). Get transported back to our youth with the portrait of Salt-n-Pepa  by Janette Beckman.

Oh yes, before I forget!

Become a member so you can have a pre-dinner cocktail at their Chapel. A speakeasy in the museum only for members. Or the famous. If you can get me in, I’ll love you even more. Just kidding. Or not…

Catching up with friends and views

I know Eataly is just around the corner. But you’ll have to save the pasta & gelato for another day.

You need to use the little time you have left to go shopping at Sunday Forever.

Their robes are heaven. So are their candles. And while you are at it, try the loungewear! You’ll never want to take it off… Add some of their statement coconut perfume and you are a Sunday Forever addict like me! Talk to Ashley, the face behind the brand.  You will both inspire each other. Amazing storytellers creating brands to adore.

Drop off your new coffee table books & Sunday Forever treats at the hotel and get all fancy.

Oh, how have we missed dressing up! Let’s go wining & dining!

I know! I know! You want to shoe shop at SJP! But by the time you get there they will be closed! I do suggest getting in touch with them. So the shoes get a role in the ‘of gold and dust’ movie!

Wouldn’t that be full circle?

Pier 17. The Greens. A cabine with a view on The Brooklyn Bridge. The perfect place to catch up with friends long time no see.

Sit back. Relax. Laugh.
Enjoy the view.
Laugh some more.
Feel the love from those you love. Cheers to friendship.

To friendship and love.

Always in an Empire State of Mind,

xoxo,

B

Download the 1 day itinerary here!

PS: Scrolling around the internet gives you some old gems ☺️. I found a few tips from Samantha herself. Double check before adding them to your itinerary.

Cause you know, the city never sleeps. Nor does it stand still.

And if you google long enough you might find a little NYC blog filled with little gems from Samantha…

PS2: Are you looking for a special gift? For someone you love. Or for you! If you are anything like me, you’ll love the Creative Workshop developed by Samantha Wills. I know we’ve all enrolled in challenges. But this is so much more and goes so much deeper! It only requires 900 seconds a day. Nor do you have to be a Picasso of any kind. Just go with the flow and discover all this new layers within yourself. The least you will get from it is a clean drawer ;).

Business owners might love to hear the Samantha Wills Masterclass is opening up again mid January! I enrolled the first time it opened up. Might have set my alarm to make sure I didn’t miss it. I’ve been working through the models step by step and learned so much. Can’t wait to implement it all here in my little piece of New York for all of you to experience.

I’m not on sponsored level yet ;), but the link is affiliate.

November 21, 2021

Welcome To New York City!

November 8th will now be know as the 'International Day of The Master Plan NYC'!

Birgit, The Master Plan NYC
The day we finally could go back to the city we all love so much. And guess who was on the first plane out? Just guess!

Yes!!! Me! It was me!

Me and some other crazy people who couldn’t wait to travel to NYC (although some were even crazier & had NYC only as a stop).
That probably was the easiest guess you ever had to take ;). I was so so lucky when boarding that plane.

I couldn’t believe it had only be 90 minutes since landing. I stopped taking pictures from the downtown skyline to take it all in. Telling myself there was no point. Pictures taken from the taxi backseat never turn out great.

I was overwhelmed with excitement. Sharing it with everyone I met on the way. The airport security guard even mirrored my excitement while going trough the list of standard questions. Picked up my luggage, did not have to wait, and walked out.

Belgians, NY missed you!

There in Newark arrival hall was Patrick, best tour guide in NYC, welcoming back the first tourists after 20 months. We all had sparkles in our eyes. Happy to see old NY friends. Excited to meet new ones. We all forget our troubles from the last 20 months and shared stories, selfies, Waffles&Dinges and questions for the upcoming days. Interviews with Björn Soenens on how excited we were to be back.

Back with the first plane. Still can’t believe it.

All of that in just 90 minutes. I couldn’t help myself. Took my phone and started snapping pictures again. Who cared if they were sharp or not. My excitement got the better off me.

During my trip I made a lot of pictures. No. Really a lot. Some really great, some really crappy ;). But looking through my lens I saw how the City had evolved after lockdown. Here  are a few of the things that caught my eye…

Masks & Proof of Vaccination

Before you had ESTA. These days you add ‘Proof of Vaccination’ accompanied with a picture ID to your list. They’ll ask for it when you want to wine & dine inside and for all major attractions. Make life easy and get it all out while you are waiting in line. People will thank you for it.

Masks are mandatory on the subway. Not a bad thing in some cases ;). Sometimes it was confusing if wearing masks was mandatory or not. On top they make a difference between fully vaccinated and not.
So I used my own rule, if the staff was wearing a mask, I would wear mine. And in crowds. Taking it only off to take pictures. But don’t do that in the Harry Potter store. There you have to wear it at all times. Or be fast like me and take the picture when nobody is watching…

Rules are changing all the time. Make sure you check with your local government when packing your bags.

Smell weed everyday...

Like many of us, NYC looked for a new way to make money during the pandemic. Marijuana got legalized (read this article for the less black & white option). This means that the-day-Carrie-got-dumbed-on-a-post-it will no longer be changed in the-day-Carrie-almost-got-arrested-for-smoking-pot.

I felt like walking around Amsterdam in some area’s. Joints were sold openly on Times Square and the odor caught my noise more than once. Maybe that’s why masks are required in some places…

Empty streets or crowded avenues

I thought it was going to be even more quiet. It was a like traveling in January/ February. Not too many tourists, but some die hards! Last years’ empty avenues were now filled with taxi’s and town cars again. Drivers yelling at traffic police. The honking when someone blocks the crossroad. Street vendors making coffee (and selling me so not ready to eat bananas when I was extremely hungry). The buzz and the fuzz is back Baby!

Everything and everyone who makes New York New York was there. Except for the huge amounts of tourists. Which is great for picture taking and waiting in line (read: not waiting in line). But enough people to make it feel alive. People watching! Can we take a minute to appreciate NYC people watching?

‘I love your pants! Oh, that color looks great on you! What a vibe you have there!’

If you need a confident boost, just walk around and compliments will reach you. They always make my heart jump and give an electric shifter. Cause who doesn’t love a compliment?

As great as they are to receive, they are even greater to give. Tell how much you love her hat. I’m sure when you see her glow, you’ll glow too.

She's waking up

The City That Never Sleeps is still snoozing. Can you blame her? She’s been buzzy for decades and after chilling for 20 months she is still hitting snooze.

Some store opening hours have been pushed back to 11.00 AM and close a bit earlier from time to time. But no worries! You’ll still have more than enough time to do all your shopping ;).
Times Square welcoming back the world!

I couldn't help but wonder...

…will she have the same energy?

Oh yes, she has!

Even better, cause we haven’t experienced it for so long. On top everyone is so happy to get back to normal life and to welcome tourists. The excitement is real!

That explains all the question marks and use of superlatives in this blog post. I will not take it down, cause I hope you can feel it too.

All the new attractions to see! To explore! You’ll be in wow! Trust me! Hudson Yards (hadn’t been there yet), Little Island, Penn Station, Summit One Vanderbilt… oh my loves you are in for some treats!

Let me know in the comments what you can’t wait to explore!

Always in an Empire State of Mind,

xoxo,

B

PS: Keep an eye on my blog, cause I’ll be sharing all the fun stuff, all the glamour and all the ins & outs of my trip soon! Can’t wait? Me neither! Check out my stories highlight on IG: NYC 2021.

PS 2: Keep your one dollar bills and your change in your pocket. I’m sure you make their day when you help a homeless guy buy his breakfast. Cause unfortunately there are more homeless people who have a real though time.

How to enjoy a New York City Luxury Hotel without staying in one: 5 must visit hotels

"I'm not a stop along the way. I'm the destination."

Blair Waldorf
Oh, luxury hotels…You probably know a few by name even if you havent stayed in one before.

The Carlyle, The St Regis, Four Seasons,…famous names with big reputations! Some you can even live in. Tommy Hilfiger for example is a resident in The Plaza.

Dreaming of one day casually saying I live in the same ‘building’ as Tommy. Till then, I’ll just wine & dine at the Plaza…Cause you don’t have to stay in a hotel to enjoy their restaurants.

In New York City many hotels invest to make sure their restaurant is high level and will attract locals and tourists alike. As a tourist this is great! Cause the atmosphere rises through the rooftop when there is a mixture of locals and tourists.

Speaking of rooftops…

Not only do hotels offer great restaurants, their rooftops are just as AMAZING! I know! Before you know it, you don’t even want to leave!

Here are a few of my favorite hotels to enjoy without staying for the night.

Hotel 1: The Mandarin Oriental

"Certain hotels get it. A lot of hotels don't. Mandarin Oriental gets it every time."

Liam Neeson
Oh, The Mandarin…

If I could, I would move in here. The luxurious interior, the view, the location! But most of all. The staff. Everyone you encounter at the Mandarin will make you feel welcome.

I’ve had the pleasure of staying at the Mandarin in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Best Hotel Ever. EVER. I haven’t had the luck to sleep in her New York sister. But she sure is on my bucket list.

Instead I’ll have breakfast and enjoy the view: Columbus Circle and Central Park will entertain you while enjoying the finest pastries. Tables near the window are reserved for hotel guests only. But trust me, 2nd row is still pretty damn amazing!

I said it before, everyone working here will treat you like a princess. And they are more than happy to take your picture.

PS: if the window tables are free, grab your chance and snap some pictures. You want to have them! Trust me!

Hotel 2: The Plaza

Famous from a movie scene.

You know The Plaza. I know the Plaza. We all know The Plaza.
This Queen has played a role in countless movies & tv shows. Probably most famous for Home Alone 2. Carrie and her friends loved to hang out in the hotel and area too.

This beauty just reopened her majestic stairs on 5th. So walk your Manolo’s right into the Palm Court for high tea
      – the perfect break after shopping in Bergdorf Goodman.

The stained glass dome is the real highlight of the greenery interior. So don’t forget to look up while sipping your tea!
Looking for some buzz? Take the escalator down to the Plaza Food Hall. All you have to do is choose from all the delicious options…

Whatever you do in The Plaza, take time to enjoy the beautiful flower arrangements in the foyer. Picture perfect!

Hotel 3: The Wythe Hotel

Like a Parisian in Williamsburgh. That’s exactly how you’ll feel dining in Le Crocodile. Don’t go home yet! Have a cocktail at the rooftop from the Whyte Hotel. Cosmo’s and the New York Skyline. A combo that never gets old!

I know, I know. The Whyte Hotel isn’t as old-fashioned luxurious as the others in this list. But the French je ne sais quoi touch makes it contemporary fancy nevertheless!

Hotel 4 & 5: The Lotte New York Plaza & The Empire

Hello Upper East Siders. Gossip Girl here.

Both hotels are main stars in Gossip Girl. The Empire, located in the Upper West Side, is the home of the one and only Chuck Bass. Whether or not you are Team Bass, the rooftop here is worth your visit. The views over Lincoln Center and Central Park are sublime!

The real bonus??? They serve breakfast and brunch! I know! Eggs Benedict while wondering what Blair would do.

Like most rooftops Friday and Saturdays are for dancing. But if you are really going wild, book a private cabana on the pool deck. Spoiling has no limits at The Empire. It’s called The Empire after all…

Back to The Upper East Side for yet another brunch favorite. The Lotte New York Plaza. The hotel where Dan more than once waited for Serena to get ready.

Like Gossip Girl said: “Breakfast is brunch and it comes with champagne, a dress code, and a hundred of our closest friends.”

Not into brunch? The Gold Room and Trouble’s Trust have an amazing menu too. All of them overlooking St Patricks Cathedral.
No reservations? Don’t you worry.  The courtyard is picture perfect whether or not it’s Christmas time.

Tell me in the comments. Which luxurious hotel is on your bucket list? Are you planning some fancy brunch too?

Read my post on dining here to make sure you get the perfect table.

Always in an Empire State of Mind,

xoxo,

B

PS: The Megan Hess personalities are my vision on how I would love to look hanging out in one of the above hotels. A girl can dream, don’t you agree?

5 tips to find a restroom in NYC: Where to go when you need to go?

“New York, like London, seems to be a cloacina [toilet] of all the depravities of human nature.”

Thomas Jefferson
As a kid my mom always told me to go to the restroom before we left the house. Even if we were only gone for 5 minutes.
Mom, I’m blaming you for always needing to go ;). You might think it’s funny, but even not knowing where the toilet is, makes me need to go.

Crazy! I know, but I’m not the only one…
Or am I?

Anyway, let’s talk restrooms! Cause a prepped girl will not waste time looking for one. We better look for bargains! Wouldn’t you agree?

So bathrooms, restrooms, toilets, the ladies, powder rooms. Whatever you want to call them. We need them. And sometimes urgently :).

Tip 1: Excuse me, where is the nearest Starbucks?

Obviously. Coffee shops, restaurants & bars are the most predictable solution.
Starbucks, your best friend in times of need. Or Whole Foods.

Just check the for-customers-only-sign first (or ignore it).

Tip 2: Hotels & department stores

It wouldn’t be the first time I enter a hotel pretending to be a guest so I can use their toilet. Walk like you belong there. It’s all in the confidence walk my love.

But I’ll admit…I’m more at ease to enter a big hotel like The Plaza than a little boutique hotel ;).

Department and larger book stores (think Barnes & Nobles) will have toilets too.

My favorite?

The one in Bergdorf  Goodmans basement. On the way over you pass their amazing beauty product assortment. A candy store for beauty addicts! Oh, don’t forget to indulge in their great smelling handlotion before moving on. A real treat!

PS: yes, this is the gorgeous store where Stanford & Anthony registered in Sex And The City: The Movie 2.
A little throwback clip here and here.
The opening scene from SATC: The Movie 2 at Bergdorf Goodman.

Tip 3: Museums, attractions & stations

Be like my mom. Tell your party to use the toilet before leaving. You are here now anyway, so better use the amenities.

I’ll admit…I’m even worse than my mom. I’ll tell my party to use the toilet when we enter AND when we leave…oh my…I need toilet therapy.

Those in Grand Central are crowded and busy most of the times. Not always the cleanest, but you can be creative, no?

I always thought the stall doors had an opening so you wouldn’t get too comfortable.

The real reason? The opening makes it notable when someone passed out. I never thought of it that way…

Tip 4: Like a walk in the park

Go for a walk to the park. Yes, it can be that easy!

A complete list of parks & their public bathrooms is available on NYC Parks.  The most spectacular ones are at Bryant Park. Best rating EVER. With classical music taking you away from the buzz & fuzz from the city and delicious smelling fresh flower I can see why.

There are only a handful of automated toilets all over the city (most are still in a Queens’ warehouse…). You can find one in Madison Square Park if you would love to test it yourself.

Tip 5: Technology helps nature

Download Flush and easily find the nearest toilet in your area.

So, now you know all about toilets.
Let’s focus on the more important stuff! Wining & Dining! Shopping & Spending!

Always in an Empire State of Mind,

xoxo,

B

PS: You can also open up Dr. Wansoo’s map with restroom locations. It is categorized into 6 sections to give you an easy location overview; public, coffee shop, book store, hotel, fast food chain and other.

PS 2: Can’t get enough ;)? Read this interesting piece in Curbed on the need for more public restrooms.

4 ways to stay connected in NYC

To wifi or not to wifi, that's the question.

Shake Speare
The City feels like 1 big hotspot. Starbucks, stores, hotels, restaurants even the subway stations have wifi! Now we only wait till it’s active on the trains too to be connect everywhere.

As an overseas tourist your phone bill can get rather high if you don’t watch out. But the days of hidden roaming costs are long gone. FaceTiming home is free when you are on the hotel wifi. You can even connect to the Empire States Building hotspot and share the view when FaceTiming your loved ones back home.

I get it, I’m an Instagram addict myself, you want to share all those beautiful pictures on your socials. Instantly.

Believe me when I say there are more than enough hotspots to connect.

But if you want to be connected all the time during your stay, I’ve got you covered!

1: Prepaid card T-Mobile

You can get a prepaid card by T-Mobile when you arrive in the city.

Many big airports over the world will offer those too.

2: Tourist Package by T-Mobile

This $30* pack will give you 21 days all-in pack. Unlimited data & texting abroad will feed even the biggest connected savvy tourists needs. Turn on your hotspot and share with your travel companions.

Find the nearest T-Mobile store here and ask for more details.

*Price at day of publication.

3: Buy a prepaid card at home

There are several options online to buy your card online already. Prices will depend on location and specifications.
You can find a 7 days unlimited card at Amazon here and a 30 days card from Bol.com here.

4: Disconnect and explore!

Go from hotspot to hotspot and enjoy the real city view in between :).

I’ve been visiting the city pre-smartphone age (I know! I don’t get it either!) and during Lets-Gram-The-Shit-Out-Of-It. I’ve never felt short of wifi. I’ve never felt the need to buy a card.

Trust me, you’ll be so busy exploring you  will not have the time to check your social media feeds.

Let me know in the comments what you are planning to do!

Always in an Empire State of Mind,

B

PS: You can always check your options with your local provider!

Nice to meet you! I’m Birgit.
NYC addict, pink lover, Robbie Williams for ever ever, a bit of a Charlotte but always wondering what Blair would do, Sauvignon at the bar after the barre.
Welcome to my little piece of NYC heaven online. Let’s conquer these famous streets together.
