5 tips to get the most out of your observatory visit

Seeing the city from above is like seeing the city for the first time. It's magic topped off with lots of pink fairy dust.

F. Scott Fitzegarld ft. Birgit Putteman
Seeing the city from above is always magical! She looks even more gorgeous from the clouds. Taxi’s look like ants and even the skyscrapers look smaller from here.

No matter how many times I’ve admired her, she never gets old! No idea what I’m talking about? Read this article on the 5 observatories first.

Here are 5 tips to help you get the most out of your visit. Whether you are visiting Empire State Building or One World Observatory. These tips can be applied to every single observatory.

1/ Choose the correct ticket

All 5 observatories offer different ticket options.

From basic entrance fee to extra experience options (eg. the glass elevator ride in the Summit OV) to an  exclusive private tour at the Empire State Building. Go wild! (Check out this article to get an overview in a nutshell.)

Most will also offer ‘VIP’ tickets so you don’t have to wait in line*. Even when you have a time slot on your ticket, you do have to wait in line. When I visited the Summit OV for the first time it took me about 40 minutes before I got through security. Calculate this time in your itinerary so you don’t miss the sunset!

Note that some will charge extra for sunset times. (We see you summit OV)
But I’ll let you in on a secret: No need to pay extra for this time frame. You can stay as long as you want so make sure you enter the observatory before sunset time and enjoy it from above. No extra charge!

Save your money for other options, like an extra audio tour. Or the overpriced tourist picture (which I love! I know they are crap, but I love them. Don’t judge me. It’s my thing).

*Nothing as frustrating as arriving at the entrance with your VIP ticket to notice there is no line. Like no one is there! You can kick yourself for paying extra for nothing. Or pretending you are a real VIP and you get a private entrance ;).

2/ Check the weather app

Oh that perfect blue sky! The best photo prop you can get. A view as far as the eye can see. Manhattan Streets and Brooklyn Bridge. Take it all in.

On days with low clouds and rain cleaning the city streets views are limited. Although clouds can make a beautiful view too…

Best days? Rain all day till about two hours before sunset. Clouds disappearing while the sun gets ready to set. No lines at the entrance and you ride up to an empty sky platform. VIP treatment without paying the price ;).

3/ Do you need to book upfront?

I’m the Master Plan. What do you think I’ll say?

Book up front!

Have a strict schedule? Book upfront!
Want to make sure you can have tickets for the Summit OV? Book upfront!
Do you want to add a special something to your visit? Book upfront!
Are you proposing? Book upfront! And check out the specials for each observatory! Oh…and send me pictures!!

Traveling during bad weather? Wait till the sky clears and book last minute when the clouds disappear.
Is the observatory a nice to have on your trip? Get in line when you pass by or have some extra time on your hands.
Not into planning? You wild thing! Why are you even reading my blog ;)? No just kidding. I get it, don’t book upfront :).

4/ How much time do you need?

Depends on the observatory you are visiting. And (if you are anything like me) the amount of pictures you’ll take.

For The Empire State Building & Top of the Rocks you’ll need about one to two hours.

The Edge can be done in like 30 minutes. Flat. It’s really not that big. Unless you want to have their famous Eastern Point picture. Cause that might set you back another 30 minutes depending on the crowd.

But for the Summit One Vanderbilt, my Loves, you’ll need 3 to 4 hours. Like easily! There are several rooms to explore all with a different experience. All that beauty to see! Not one. Not two. But THREE floors to explore.
She is the only one showing you all the other Beauties; Empire, Rockefeller, Chrysler and so so so much more. Take out your camera and snap your heart out!!

I’m not picking favorites, but if I would, Summit OV would easily be in my top 3!

One World Observatory is a gem you have to experience! I visit her every single time and I still get goosebumps. Pure magic if you ask me.
Foresee 2 hours to experience her and maybe have a drink at the bar. Or is it just because I had a nice afternoon there with my besties that I love that bar so much?

5/ When to visit

Try to schedule a visit on your first or second evening. This will help you to get a clear overview of how the city is structured. Easier to see from above than from the metro. A bird view will help you orientate yourself during your visit.

Did you note I wrote evening? Or more specific right before sunset. This will give you New York in daylight and the transition towards the night. The lights that pop up. Evening traffic down there. The lights on the ESB. The sun setting behind the Hudson.

The city really never sleeps!

But note, sunset hours are different throughout the year (I know obvious, but you are warned) and don’t forget to calculate extra time to get up there. If the sun sets at 6 PM don’t arrive at 5.30 cause I guarantee you’ll miss it.

I’ll repeat for the cheap seats at the back (extra bonus points if you know where I’m referring too): No need to pay more for sunset tickets. You can stay as long as you want!

Now tell me in the comments any other questions you have concerning the observatories and I’ll answer them in my next article.

Always in an Empire State of Mind,

xoxo,

B

PS: This post is part of a bigger series regarding the observatories. Make sure to catch the rest of them too! Cause I love it here high in the sky where dreams are made.

The 5 NYC Observatories: A comparison to help you choose the best one!

'The Empire State Building is the closest thing to heaven in this city.'

Deborah Kerr
One of the most asked questions I get is: ‘which observatory should we book?’

I know! It can be hard to choose only one. So don’t! Pick 2; 1 Uptown & 1 Downtown.

What can I say? I’m a Libra. Making choices is hard.

Anyway, back to the views.

I’ve been in the city numerous times and I never get bored of the views. The thrill of the elevator ride. The excitement when you get out and walk towards the floor to ceiling windows. Take your time. Enjoy the view. Don’t forget to breath.

Here is an overview of the 5 observatories and my opinion on them…

1 + 2: The Classics

They’ve been around way longer than their fancy friends. They’ve stood the test of time and will keep conquering your hearts for years to come.

Empire State Building a.k.a ESB – sounds pretty cool for an oldie no? Another oldie, but goodie is Top of the Rock @Rockefeller.

Make sure to add one of these two on your itinerary.

Travelling with childeren? Choose ESB and visit King Kong.

Want a complete experience around the observatory? Go to Top of the Rock and enjoy all the stores and restaurants around Rockefeller Centre.

3: Is there an Edge at the Edge?

I’ll admit this is my least favorite observatory (don’t tell them). It’s rather small outside. Although it’s the highest outdoor sky deck in the Western Hemisphere. Nothing is really going on.

I know I sound like a spoiled brat. But let’s be honest the competitors are raising the standards and the Edge is not following.

Are you visiting Hudson Yards and don’t have too much time? This one is for you.

The city view is stunning!! The outside experience makes you feel alive and full of energy. And no side tracking by fringes cause there aren’t any…

Don’t get blindsided by the influencers pictures of the glass floor, by now it’s scratched super hard (no protective shoe covers here) and the Eastern Point (the line takes forever). It will not make up for the lack of experience and the little outside platform it really is.

But hold your horses…it does have a major card hidden in his sleeves: The City Climb.

'City Climb is the highest open-air building ascent in the world. Climbers scale the outside of a skyscraper more than 1,200 feet above the ground, then lean out and look down from the highest outdoor platform in New York City. It’s an adventure unlike any other in the world and an achievement that you will remember for the rest of your life.'

The Edge

Not afraid of heights and in for the experience of a lifetime? This one is for you! Buckle up and enjoy!

4 + 5: The New Kids On the Block

Okay, One World Observatory is not new new. But it is on the same level as The Summit One Vanderbilt.

Both make your visit a true magical experience. Much more than just view gazing. But experiencing the city through your visit. I will not say too much about it.

Don’t want to spoil the magic. Just know there is a lot of pixie dust in the air at both observatories.

Specially at One World. I didn’t see it coming (my friend was like: ‘seriously? You didn’t see it coming??). So I hope you are like me and get blown away. But even if you know, you will still get goosebumps!

Decision Time My loves...

If you have time visit 2 observatories.

One World Observatory will give you the Downtown vibes. The Oculus, 9/11 Memorial, Lady Liberty, Wall Street and much more.

But the 2nd one is slightly more difficult.

Focus Birgit. Forget the Libra in you.

Okay here we go:

Are you a Classic babe who loves King Kong? Go for the Empire State Building. Classic New York!

Are you looking for Central Park views, and want to stay close to your shopping plan? Go for Top of the Rock at Rockefeller.

Are you dressed up and ready to explode your Instagram? Book the Summit. Thank me later!

Let me know in the comments which one you are visiting!

Always in an Empire State of Mind,

xoxo,

B

PS: Keep your eye on the blog, cause I have 2 more posts coming up.

Sundays well Spent: Across the Brooklyn Bridge

“Brooklyn’s good. Brooklyn’s funky. Brooklyn’s happening.”

Waris Dirie
Sundays well spent brings a week of content!

When I was a child I hated Sundays. Made me feel nostalgic and even a little sad. Sundays still feel like this when I have no plans. So I listen to the IG quote and plan fun things to do . Cause after all, Sundays are for relaxing with friends and lots of great food.

Whether you take the ferry or walk the Bridge – and yes, when lazy just take the subway 🙈 – crossing the East River on Sunday will bring you a lot of fun.

Join me on a quick trip to the Brooklyn Bridge Area.

From Breakfast over brunch to dinner and cocktails

Oh all the food! And these tips are just the tip of the iceberg (couldn’t help myself 😉).

  • Time Out Market (55 Water St): No nood to choose here. You can try it all. Don't forget to go upstairs. Instagram your heart out!
  • Luke's Lobster (11 Water St): Order take-away. Find a bench and enjoy the view & your lobster.
  • River Café (1 Water St): Something to celebrate? Or Just in need to dress up? This is your place to be.
  • 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge (60 Furman St): Pool. Cocktails. View. I still have to convince you?

Don't forget your smile

The Manhattan Skyline is your backdrop. It doesn’t get any better! But still the Brooklyn Bridge area has some gems to add likes to your feed.

  • Jane's Carousel (New Dock St): We are never to old to ride a gorgeous carousel.
  • Brooklyn Bridge Park (334 Furman St): I do hope you have enough space on your Cloud.
  • Pebble Beach (65 Plymouth St): the skyline, Jane's Carousel, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Manhattan Bridge. All these photo props at your disposal.
  • Washington St (oh yes in Washington St): If you don't want a zillion other tourists on your picture be there at sunrise!

Text a friend and meet me under the Bridge 🎀

Always in an Empire State of Mind,

xoxo,

B

PS: Don’t like Sundays like my child-me?

Go and have a look at Sunday Forever! This NYC woman-owed brand will give you all the good vibes to turn Sunday (and every day actually) into a chill party.

5 tips to hail a taxi like a local

“In New York City, a lot of people think ‘the great outdoors’ is the area between your front door and a taxi cab.”

Michael Bloomberg
I lean back and take it all in. 15 minutes ago I got in the taxi at Newark. My first trip back after the lockdown.

I listen to the African conversation between my taxi driver and his friend on the phone. I love the sound of the exotic words and sentences. Here and there I catch a French one. I feel lucky.

Lucky to be back.

The taxi ride from the airport to the city is always the most excited one. The anticipation of the city. The thrill of spotting the skyline. The start of a new adventure. All those feelings in the back of this yellow taxi.

I’m double lucky, cause my driver is giving it all to make it the most glamorous experience. He’s in his late twenties. Dressed in a gorgeous anthracite grey suit. Helping me like a real gentlemen with my luggage. Which was rather heavy with all the Belgian chocolate I brought as presents. Keeping the conversation light, but filled with information about NYC life during the pandemic.

I’ve probably overtipped. But then again I was his first international passenger in 18 months. He dressed for the occasion. I gave him a compliment and hoped all my taxi rides would be this stylish….

Fancy or maniac....

Let’s face it. Not all rides will be fancy like this.

Some drivers don’t even stop their phone conversation long enough to hear the address you’re going. Some talk too much. Some don’t say a word. Some say words you don’t understand. You have all shapes and sizes when it comes to taxi drivers personalities. But when they drop you off safely a 15% tip is standard rate. If they helped you with luggage, didn’t drive like a maniac you might even want to tip 20%. (More on tipping in NYC here.)

Now that we’re talking maniac drivers. Whether or not you are life is at risk. You should always wear your seatbelt. It’s mandatory as of November 2021.

When nearing my destination I’ll have a look at the meter and add tip. So at arrival I can quickly pay and jump out. Cause time is money my Loves!

Want to know where you money goes to? These schemes break it down for you. While the left side is an overview of taxi costs depending on the airport.

Which taxi to hail?

Signing to the driver and he doesn’t stop? You might be hailing the wrong one my Love. It’s all about the light. Taking selfies. Hailing taxis. It’s all about the light.

In short:
  • when all 3 lights on the top panel are on, the taxi is off duty. If your stop is on his way home, I might take you along anyway.
  • when none of the lights are lit, there are already passengers inside.
  • when the middle light is on, the number, you have a winner!
So hold your clutch in one hand, put your other one in the air, sign to the taxi which has the middle light lit and release your inner Carrie.

Hailing a taxi the Carrie Bradshaw way (source pinterest)

How to hail it?

First things first. Don’t yell ‘Taxi’? I know, I know. We all have this strong need to do it at least once during our trip. Very movie like. But let’s not give away we are tourists, shall we?

Street corners are the ideal place to hail a taxi. Stand on the street which makes you stand out of the sidewalk traffic, but for the love of Chanel, be careful. One hand in the air like you mean it. Give him the eye. A good eye so he knows you are serious, but don’t give him your number :).

The most important tip…

Watch the traffics direction. Going Uptown? Don’t hail a taxi on 5th, but walk a block to Madison. This will help you save both money & time.

Taxi vs Uber vs Subway

We don’t have Uber here in Belgium so I’m not a specialist. I did try it during my latest visit and it’s so, so easy. But call me old fasioned, I love the romance of hailing a taxi on the streets…I’ve seen way to many movies.

I can help you better when it comes to choosing between a taxi or the subway.

First, there is the price. Doing everything by taxi will be rather expensive (and waist of time). I would suggest combining both. The subway is perfect for longer distances, when you are with a bigger group or during rush hour.

Taxis on the other hand are my go to when my feet are killing me 😃 and at night. Specially when traveling alone. A girl has to feel safe, wouldn’t you agree?

Inside tip.

Uber has an app, but so do the yellow taxis. Download Curb and book your taxi up to 24h in advance.

Getting to the correct address

Say the address when you get in. Taxi drivers are obliged to take you where you want. Even if this means Brooklyn.

They all know where the Empire State Building is and the most known hotels. But if you want to go to Manolo Blahnik you better say Madison & 64th. Please.

If you ever say ‘Follow that car’.

Please. Make a reel and tag me!

Always in an Empire State of Mind,

xoxo,

B

5 Tips to choose your hotel in NYC

'I don't like the idea that one hotel could be better than another. In any city, I try to find a hotel that has the identity of that place - Claridge's in London, the Danieli or Cipriani in Venice. In New York, I stay at the Mercer Hotel; it is so much in the character of SoHo.'

Jean Nouvel
Which hotel would you recommend?

It’s one of the most asked questions when planning a NYC trip.
Choosing a hotel is not like mathematics. There is more than one correct answer. There are literally hundreds! And just like colors, not everyone likes pink (I know! I’m baffled too!), the opinion about hotel rooms is very personal.

So here are 5 tips to help you find the perfect hotel according your wishes!

Tip 1: Location, location, location!

This one tip counts for 3!

Trust me it’s that important! It’s like real estate. The better the location, the higher the demand…the higher the price. Luckily for you, NYC offer hotels at all price levels. And when you look a bit further, you’ll find great location and great price!

Firstly, let’s talk areas.
Planning a trip in which 90% is spend in the Financial District, I would not recommend a hotel in the Bronx :). You figured that out already? Didn’t you?

Before you choose a hotel, make a rough program to see where you’ll spend most of your time. (You can read a few trips on planning here and here.) Are you planning a daily run around J.K. Onassis Reservoir the Upper East Side or the Upper West Side is your area to look for a hotel.

On top, the hotel area is the area you’ll explore the most. Walking around for morning coffee. Discovering little hidden gems near your hotel. I stay in a different area each time I visit. This helps me to really get to know each neighborhood better.

First timers look for a hotel in Midtown. Many major sightseeing locations are just a few blocks away. But keep in mind so are many tourists ;).

Got something better in store for you! Look a bit further than just Manhattan. Like say…Long Island City! Don’t run away! I’ll explain.

Location, location, location. Not just the area of the hotel. But also the few blocks around the hotel. If it’s located near a subway stop, you are in business! It takes you anywhere. Anytime. So no need the spend all your money on a Manhattan hotel. Just put some on the OMNY card and use the rest for cocktails at 230 5th! You are welcome ;)!

The subway is just down the street at the Paper Factory Hotel and takes you to Midtown in 10 minutes.

Tip: use Google Maps to see if there are any subway stops near your hotel.

The Paper Factory Hotel, 7-06 36th St, Long Island City

Tip 4: Budget

I’ll admit! This girl dreams of staying at the Mandarin Oriental, but till I win the lottery I have to ask myself the same question as you…

What do you want to spend?

We have to talk numbers when booking hotels. And that number is different for everyone. So no judging here. Personally I prefer extra spending money so I don’t go for highend hotels. Instead I look for a hotel with a great deal. I always tell myself: ‘you will only be there to sleep. Spend your money wisely’.

I’m not good with spending money wisely! Spending money. Yes. Spending it wisely. No.

So I need some help from a friend. In this case, my friend is called Connections!

‘A travel agency? Why? You can book online!’ I hear your thinking! But trust me on this. You will be as addicted as I am!

Cause honey, haven’t you learned anything from Covid? Low cost agencies (and flights) turn out high cost in many cases. You don’t want to read all the horror stories of people loosing all their travel money after booking online or with a low cost agency. No, you don’t have to agree with me. But if you are living in the Belgian area, trust me Connections is your go to! #notsponsored #reallylovethem

Great deals! Best service! Amazing advice! Great staff! You can thank me later!

Not living in the area? Do check their site for some hotel inspiration.

A budget hotel I love is BW Bowery Hanbee. The rooms are rather big, at least for NYC standards ;). Great location. No correction. Amazing location!! Near a subway. And most importantly just a few blocks from all time favorites like Pietro Nolita and Sézane ;)….
You do want to have breakfast elsewhere…you can’t have it all for this money.

Sites like Booking.com and Agoda will give you the option to explore hotels based on the money you want to spend. A great filter to limit the choices. But before you book through those kind of sites, make sure to check the hotel itself. It might give you more value for the same money! Read: upgrade it is!

Check out my Pinterest board for some hotel inspiration.

Mandarin Oriental, 80 Columbus Circle, NYC
BW Bowery Hanbee, 231 Grand Street, NYC

Tip 5: Reviews vs Recommendations

I don’t know about you. But reviews stress me out! Big time! All these people having different opinions about the same place! Arhgh! Who to believe?
Had the reviewer a bad day when writing it? Or was the concierge going through a really bad break up? Or was the stay really hell? I’ll never know!

The other day I met someone who was madly in love with the Jane Hotel.
I hated my stay there! Really! Never ever again*. Smallest rooms ever, bad heating that could not be controlled, lots of noise. She on the other hand goes there every time. It’s her all time favorite.
Reviews really depend on what you as a traveller value & need and how the specific hotel answers those. Please keep that in mind when reading the opinions of online strangers having a bad Monday cause they are no longer in NYC ;).

*FYI, this hotel was booked based after a Google search…I still had a few things to learn back then.

The Jane Hotel, 113 Jane Street, NYC

What is your favorite NYC hotel? Let me know in the comments!

Always in an Empire State of Mind,

xoxo,

B

PS: What about Airbnb? Well…renting on short term (under 30 days) is rather complicated and not 100% legal in NYC. So make sure everything is legit before you book. There are plenty of Craigslist memes to prove the questaionably off rental ads.…

You are warned, but if you like traveling on the edge. You go honey!

How to enjoy a New York City Luxury Hotel without staying in one: 5 must visit hotels

"I'm not a stop along the way. I'm the destination."

Blair Waldorf
Oh, luxury hotels…You probably know a few by name even if you havent stayed in one before.

The Carlyle, The St Regis, Four Seasons,…famous names with big reputations! Some you can even live in. Tommy Hilfiger for example is a resident in The Plaza.

Dreaming of one day casually saying I live in the same ‘building’ as Tommy. Till then, I’ll just wine & dine at the Plaza…Cause you don’t have to stay in a hotel to enjoy their restaurants.

In New York City many hotels invest to make sure their restaurant is high level and will attract locals and tourists alike. As a tourist this is great! Cause the atmosphere rises through the rooftop when there is a mixture of locals and tourists.

Speaking of rooftops…

Not only do hotels offer great restaurants, their rooftops are just as AMAZING! I know! Before you know it, you don’t even want to leave!

Here are a few of my favorite hotels to enjoy without staying for the night.

Hotel 1: The Mandarin Oriental

"Certain hotels get it. A lot of hotels don't. Mandarin Oriental gets it every time."

Liam Neeson
Oh, The Mandarin…

If I could, I would move in here. The luxurious interior, the view, the location! But most of all. The staff. Everyone you encounter at the Mandarin will make you feel welcome.

I’ve had the pleasure of staying at the Mandarin in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Best Hotel Ever. EVER. I haven’t had the luck to sleep in her New York sister. But she sure is on my bucket list.

Instead I’ll have breakfast and enjoy the view: Columbus Circle and Central Park will entertain you while enjoying the finest pastries. Tables near the window are reserved for hotel guests only. But trust me, 2nd row is still pretty damn amazing!

I said it before, everyone working here will treat you like a princess. And they are more than happy to take your picture.

PS: if the window tables are free, grab your chance and snap some pictures. You want to have them! Trust me!

Hotel 2: The Plaza

Famous from a movie scene.

You know The Plaza. I know the Plaza. We all know The Plaza.
This Queen has played a role in countless movies & tv shows. Probably most famous for Home Alone 2. Carrie and her friends loved to hang out in the hotel and area too.

This beauty just reopened her majestic stairs on 5th. So walk your Manolo’s right into the Palm Court for high tea
      – the perfect break after shopping in Bergdorf Goodman.

The stained glass dome is the real highlight of the greenery interior. So don’t forget to look up while sipping your tea!
Looking for some buzz? Take the escalator down to the Plaza Food Hall. All you have to do is choose from all the delicious options…

Whatever you do in The Plaza, take time to enjoy the beautiful flower arrangements in the foyer. Picture perfect!

Hotel 3: The Wythe Hotel

Like a Parisian in Williamsburgh. That’s exactly how you’ll feel dining in Le Crocodile. Don’t go home yet! Have a cocktail at the rooftop from the Whyte Hotel. Cosmo’s and the New York Skyline. A combo that never gets old!

I know, I know. The Whyte Hotel isn’t as old-fashioned luxurious as the others in this list. But the French je ne sais quoi touch makes it contemporary fancy nevertheless!

Hotel 4 & 5: The Lotte New York Plaza & The Empire

Hello Upper East Siders. Gossip Girl here.

Both hotels are main stars in Gossip Girl. The Empire, located in the Upper West Side, is the home of the one and only Chuck Bass. Whether or not you are Team Bass, the rooftop here is worth your visit. The views over Lincoln Center and Central Park are sublime!

The real bonus??? They serve breakfast and brunch! I know! Eggs Benedict while wondering what Blair would do.

Like most rooftops Friday and Saturdays are for dancing. But if you are really going wild, book a private cabana on the pool deck. Spoiling has no limits at The Empire. It’s called The Empire after all…

Back to The Upper East Side for yet another brunch favorite. The Lotte New York Plaza. The hotel where Dan more than once waited for Serena to get ready.

Like Gossip Girl said: “Breakfast is brunch and it comes with champagne, a dress code, and a hundred of our closest friends.”

Not into brunch? The Gold Room and Trouble’s Trust have an amazing menu too. All of them overlooking St Patricks Cathedral.
No reservations? Don’t you worry.  The courtyard is picture perfect whether or not it’s Christmas time.

Tell me in the comments. Which luxurious hotel is on your bucket list? Are you planning some fancy brunch too?

Read my post on dining here to make sure you get the perfect table.

Always in an Empire State of Mind,

PS: The Megan Hess personalities are my vision on how I would love to look hanging out in one of the above hotels. A girl can dream, don’t you agree?

5 tips for dining & wining in NYC

"Food may not be the answer to world peace, but it’s a start."

Anthony Bourdain

There are more than 27 000 restaurants in NYC.

More than 27 000!!

Let that sink in for a moment. You can eat 3 times a day for more than 24 years at a different restaurant. I don’t think any of us is that hungry. But just so you know…no excuses for going hangry in the city.

So how not to go hangry in a city that never sleeps where you can always eat…5 tips for you!

TIP 1: Check the ABC rating

The Health Department makes it rather easy to find good restaurants. Or at least hygienic ones ;). Every restaurant is obliged to display their rating in their front window or more correct: ‘where they can easily be seen by people passing by‘. The rating is A, B or C. A being amazingly, first in class while C stands for catastrophically bad and waiting to either upgrade or go out of business.

At least once a year every restaurant gets an unannounced inspection (food handling & temperature, personal hygiene and vermin control are all being checked). Okay, it will not tell you if the chef masters his cooking, but you can be sure whether or not find a cockroach in your salad. That’s a good start, want you say?

Wanna be even more prepared? The ABCeats site includes all 27 000+ restaurants and their grading. You can search on location and neighborhood. The perfect planner friend if you ask me. Happy scrolling!

Tip 2: Become best friends with your concierge

In the Hudson, we had the best concierge! Like ever! Talk to him/ her. Ask for under the radar tips, weekend must do’s, latest news, where to go and what to drink. A good concierge will tell you the insides of the neighborhood. And more!

Store employees, bar tenders, that beautiful girl with a Felix coffee…they all know where to go. A compliment and a big smile might get you the best kept secret from a local New Yorker. Places you otherwise might skip or not even find. Trust me. You’ll thank me later!

Tip 3: Reservation for 2 please!

Imagine the disapointment of dressing up for dinner at Buddakan only to find out they are fully booked! The horror!

I make sure to make dinner reservations at OpenTable or Resy.

Both sites include reviews too. I don’t know about you, but I find reviews hard to read. Some will say it’s heaven. While others claim it’s hell. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. I’m a Libra after all…

Don’t forget that some places only open up reservations 1 month in advance. Set your timers and make sure you are ready!

It took me 2 attempts to get a reservation so I could star in my own version of Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Only to discover it was overhyped completely… Hopefully the renewed Blue Box Cafe will conquer my heart after all. (Reopening foreseen in 2022).

Tip 4: Google Maps

I know I repeat myself. But Google Maps really is your go-to when planning your trip.

It shows all restaurants in your neighborhood with 1 click. You might discover a hidden gem one block down that becomes your own favorite lunch place. Use it both at home when planning your trip. Or in NYC when standing on the corner of we-need-food-now and google-maps-to-the-rescue.

Fancy the latest it-dessert? open Insta to see which places offer the most grammable food. The waiting line you get for free ;). But some really are worth the wait!

Tip 5: Eat at (your) hotel

Here in Belgium we don’t really have that eat-at-a-hotel-culture. But I always adapt it in NYC.

Many hotels have delicious menu’s with renovating chefs to attract guests. I think it’s the perfect way to enjoy fancy hotels without paying for an expensive room.

PS: I’ll make a complete post with my favorites. But here are a few to satisfy your hunger 😉

Tips on tipping like a real New Yorker: the how, the what and the when!

When you tip your server well, you're spreading goodwill and love.”

Bert McCoy
Depending where you live this post might be very obvious or an handy explanation.

For me, as Belgian, tipping like New Yorkers doesn’t always come natural. Of course, a few euros here and there. But adding 20% to the restaurant bill isn’t something I do.

When in Rome do as the Romans do.

Or in this case…

When in NYC, do as New Yorkers do.

Minimum wage is very low and many service providers only get the minimum (sometimes even less…) hoping to make a better living with tips. So don’t be cheap and tip properly!

Who to tip?

In short you should tip everyone who provides you a service. Yes, everyone!

Specially when they did a great job. Bar tenders, taxi drivers, housekeeping, hairdressers, manicure, doorman,…

They serve you? You tip them.

How much to tip?

The next question you probably have: how much do I have to tip?

This is slightly more complex. Cause it depends on the service they offered and how good they did it.

Don’t you worry.
Many restaurants calculate  for you. The bill shows 1 to 3 amounts related to your satisfaction level. These can vary between 15% and 30% off your total. They are just a suggestion, but very handy. Cause math can become a bit more challenging after 3 Cosmo’s ;).

No suggestion on the bill? An easy way is to double the sales tax amount (8.875% in NYC) and there you have it. The perfect tipping amount.

Do check the bill for a phrase like ‘service included’. Some restaurants will include an 18% service fee automatically. No need to pay double tipping. Unless you were very, very happy with the service :).

Restaurants aren’t the only place you should be generous with $ bills.

Who else to tip?

Here is a short list for the most common services:

  • taxi drivers 15%
  • waiters 15% to 25% (10% if service was below satisfactory)
  • bar tenders minimum $1 a drink
  • house keeping $3 to $5 a night
  • doormen $2 to hail a cab
  • porters $2 per bag, but please when heavy, go heavy on the tipping 😉
  • getting pampered? Add 15 to 25%

Many locations, if not all, accept credit cards, but appreciate if you tip in cash nevertheless.

I always make sure I have $1 and $5 bills for tipping purpose. Totally awkward to tip your taxi driver and ask for change.

Cause time is money. Specially during rush hour.

When to tip?

You probably saw a movie scene, or two, in which the main character tips the waiter at the beginning of the evening to assure a sublime service. You might have a friend who tips housekeeping the first day of her stay. All in the need for extra towels and free toiletries.

The concierge who gives you the best restaurant tip deserves a $5 tip. Or give a big one at the end of your stay. Whatever you decide, tip them well, cause they might get you in the complete booked show or the best table in the restaurant.
Oh, I love a great concierge! The best one I ever met was in the Hudson New York.

Tipping at the beginning of your stay could be smart! Cause I’m sure you agree. We all looooovvveeee to be spoiled!
And don’t forget to tip your tour guide! Consider around 20%, but make the amount in line with the tour size & length.

Always in an Empire State of Mind,

xoxo,

B

5 tips to find a restroom in NYC: Where to go when you need to go?

“New York, like London, seems to be a cloacina [toilet] of all the depravities of human nature.”

Thomas Jefferson
As a kid my mom always told me to go to the restroom before we left the house. Even if we were only gone for 5 minutes.
Mom, I’m blaming you for always needing to go ;). You might think it’s funny, but even not knowing where the toilet is, makes me need to go.

Crazy! I know, but I’m not the only one…
Or am I?

Anyway, let’s talk restrooms! Cause a prepped girl will not waste time looking for one. We better look for bargains! Wouldn’t you agree?

So bathrooms, restrooms, toilets, the ladies, powder rooms. Whatever you want to call them. We need them. And sometimes urgently :).

Tip 1: Excuse me, where is the nearest Starbucks?

Obviously. Coffee shops, restaurants & bars are the most predictable solution.
Starbucks, your best friend in times of need. Or Whole Foods.

Just check the for-customers-only-sign first (or ignore it).

Tip 2: Hotels & department stores

It wouldn’t be the first time I enter a hotel pretending to be a guest so I can use their toilet. Walk like you belong there. It’s all in the confidence walk my love.

But I’ll admit…I’m more at ease to enter a big hotel like The Plaza than a little boutique hotel ;).

Department and larger book stores (think Barnes & Nobles) will have toilets too.

My favorite?

The one in Bergdorf  Goodmans basement. On the way over you pass their amazing beauty product assortment. A candy store for beauty addicts! Oh, don’t forget to indulge in their great smelling handlotion before moving on. A real treat!

PS: yes, this is the gorgeous store where Stanford & Anthony registered in Sex And The City: The Movie 2.
A little throwback clip here and here.
The opening scene from SATC: The Movie 2 at Bergdorf Goodman.

Tip 3: Museums, attractions & stations

Be like my mom. Tell your party to use the toilet before leaving. You are here now anyway, so better use the amenities.

I’ll admit…I’m even worse than my mom. I’ll tell my party to use the toilet when we enter AND when we leave…oh my…I need toilet therapy.

Those in Grand Central are crowded and busy most of the times. Not always the cleanest, but you can be creative, no?

I always thought the stall doors had an opening so you wouldn’t get too comfortable.

The real reason? The opening makes it notable when someone passed out. I never thought of it that way…

Tip 4: Like a walk in the park

Go for a walk to the park. Yes, it can be that easy!

A complete list of parks & their public bathrooms is available on NYC Parks.  The most spectacular ones are at Bryant Park. Best rating EVER. With classical music taking you away from the buzz & fuzz from the city and delicious smelling fresh flower I can see why.

There are only a handful of automated toilets all over the city (most are still in a Queens’ warehouse…). You can find one in Madison Square Park if you would love to test it yourself.

Tip 5: Technology helps nature

Download Flush and easily find the nearest toilet in your area.

So, now you know all about toilets.
Let’s focus on the more important stuff! Wining & Dining! Shopping & Spending!

Always in an Empire State of Mind,

xoxo,

B

PS: You can also open up Dr. Wansoo’s map with restroom locations. It is categorized into 6 sections to give you an easy location overview; public, coffee shop, book store, hotel, fast food chain and other.

PS 2: Can’t get enough ;)? Read this interesting piece in Curbed on the need for more public restrooms.
